A Dialogue and Light Practice with Dare Carasquillo & Kaila June Keliikuli for people applying somatics and embodied research to their life and work.

Join Kaila June Keliikuli, director of IMSomatics an ISMETA Approved Training Program, and teacher Darius (dare) Carrasquillo, developer of the Story-State-Action Model, for a 2-hr Live Online event.

How to Play with Fire: contemporary somatics in a burning world is an emergent dialogue designed to guide you through a thinking and sensing process to better relate to the territory called 'self'. Through conversation and a light somatic practice led by dare, we will spark the noticing, identifying, describing and critiquing of culturally shared human behavior patterns. Presented in the context of the cycles of time/seasons from a Daoist animist perspective, dare will be discussing 'contents of mind/ nature of mind' as applied to the body/somatics in the fire horse year.

Learn how to play with your states and actions in any situation and access your creative ability to repattern the links between 'sensing-feeling-thinking-acting'. Practice identifying the constraints of our modern worldview including the binary colonial value system in which we swim like fish who don't know land. Due to our present condition as humans with the legacy of thousands of years of imperialism, the process of unwinding our thinking and acting so we can more readily experience reality beyond our social conditioning is a perplexing task. To help us move along, dare teaches neuro-decolonization as creative process with somatic activities and theatre arts/ play. Through their Story-State-Action Model, dare reveals how returning to an Indigenous value system, where body and land are related to with dignity, is not only possible but also enjoyable when we learn how to play with fire.

Dare (they/them - because there is no such thing as an individual and gender is a social fiction) is a nondual animist, multidisciplinary artist-facilitator and educator, heavily influenced by their long and ongoing practice of Daoist arts and related philosophies. Their work explores the integration of animist practices, liberatory anti-oppression principles and multi-modal theater arts, which can be pithily summed up as Death Practice & Deathclown. Their larger framework is The Story-State-Action model which explains nondual animism and neuro-decolonization for the secular western mind.
They are based in Chinook Lands aka Portland, OR, USA.

Briefly, part of my work here is to tell people that the spirits/ancestors are real and to help folks figure out how to tune their instrument (whole self) towards that larger, more diverse, more multi-plural conversation called Death (Dao). I do that through various modes of narrative art practice - poetry, writing, singing, movement, theater... These are rooted in and informed by my long practice of Daoist arts (polestar astrology, yijing divination, daoist dream yoga, etc.)

I design my art with and through lenses such as Queer Ecology, Disability Justice, trans-species animism, Dreaming and Deep Time Ancestry. Being of mixed-race heritage, chronically sick and poor (though these labels can become prisons in themselves) has been a wisdom path, poison and medicine in this life and informs all my choices. Pain, Fear & Hunger are Wisdom Teachers, not necessarily problems to be solved.

Kaila June Keliikuli (she/they) is a daughter, sister, mother, spouse and auntie whose ancestors settled Turtle Island, aka USA, in the early 17th century during the colonial period. Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains, her last name is Hawaiian and is gifted through her wife, Maile Kahealani Keliikuli. Kaila is a movement teacher and the director of Interdisciplinary Movement & Somatics, an ISMETA Approved Training Program. With a background as a performing artist, personal trainer and somatic movement educator, Kaila’s approach has emerged through a systems science, co-creative, relational way.

As a young adult, she began developing the movement system Somatic Groundwork
(or they began developing her). Somatic Groundwork blends mindful attention, intentional rest, varied effort and novel choice while relating with sensing, moving and thinking. Somatic patterning, a creative way to shift limiting beliefs and behaviors through bottom-up learning and body-based inquiry, is enhanced through experiential movement activities. Kaila advocates for a movement movement to maintain body connection with land and to encourage joy in our aliveness.

During this 2-hour Live Online presentation, Kaila will spark a dialogue with dare to reveal the elements of the Story-State-Action model.  How the model can be used to help evolve the nature of our own experiencing will be highlighted. Then join dare in a light somatic practice, a guided activity that is accessible for all bodies, that provides an easy entry point for training how we interact with contents of mind/ habits of mind/ nature of mind.

We cannot control, what Patrick Farnsworth of Last Born in the Wilderness names, "the dizzying, heartrending, numbing, enraging and maddening churn of events we experience and witness daily". However, we can change our own learning system to help minimize confusion, shock, overwhelm, anxiety and exhaustion. The heat and intensity of the current times is at a temperature that is challenging to endure. Our personal and collective stability relies on the maintenance of our inner landscape, our somatic processing, so that we can be better at working together in a good way.

Microlearning Page with ticket purchase
Get a handmade digital playlist curated by Kaila when you buy a ticket. The digital playlist serves as a micro prep course for the live event.

The Microlearning Page will introduce the Story-State-Action model with a focus on Story or View. dare writes, "Story, which can also be called VIEW, or Cosmology, involves biases, beliefs, cultural conditioning, and learned (often subconscious) narratives. It is often highly conceptual (abstracted) and based in and around language." Our cultural worldview influences how we make meaning of the world and perform ourselves. Worldview is how we interpret reality and tells us what to think- rather than how to think. Have you tested your worldview recently?

As soon as you purchase, the digital page will immediately be sent to your email containing 4 videos that are unreleased/ not available to the public.

* any one who registers will have limited access to the Microlearning Page and Event Recording through June 21st
